School starts soon

Today the girls got dropped off at school at around 2 so Alex could go to work. I am trying to get as much done in my office before school starts. My job is very boring at this time of the year, but necessary. Mostly I am there to fix mistakes, call parents, prepare for the coming year. It's hard for me to explain to the girls exactly what I do. It would be hard to explain to anyone. They came and picked tomatoes from the KMS garden ( I will have to take pictures of it) which they loved. Sucena kept asking me if they were ripe or not. They ate a bunch of tomatoes and watched a movie in the ESL room while I finished some work. It is nice to have such a nice school to work at where people are not bothered by this. As people are coming in, they are getting to know them. Milena and Mirellen are very nervous about school starting, mostly because of their English, which is coming along just fine. Today Milena asked me "Is it normal to listen to English and think that people are speaking in Spanish because you are understanding what they are saying?" Yes.. I said it is normal. Second Language Acquisition, what a beautiful thing!

  1. Alex and Mercedes... have just seen that there is a message waiting for me, but when i try to access it, it won't work. If you had something to tell me, please feel free to email me directly; I don't want to miss out on a thing :) Can't find a way to send YOU a message, so I'm just going to post this note here... sometimes technology seems to complicate things!

  2. I'm glad that the girls are feeling comfortable at KMS even though they may also be a bit nervous about starting school. We talked about that when I was with them earlier this month, and I assured them that there will be many people to help them at their new school. Milena and Mirellen also told me that they are understanding more and more English, yet find it hard to verbalize a response. I explained that this was all part of the language acquisition process and encouraged them to take some risks when trying to communicate in English. I wish I could be at school to help with their adjustment this year, but am glad to have access to this blog to hear all about your experiences. :)
