Let me be clear. I hate long hair. Maybe it is because I can't really grow a long straight mane of hair like so many people around here, but truly this is not the reason why. The truth is that I know of too many horror stories about long hair: lice, knots, fire (a friend whose hair caught on fire and never wore it long again) and the one about a woman in my town who got scalped when her long mane of hair went through a machine. But there is also something else that bothers me, and that is our definition of womanhood through long hair. For some reason we think that a woman is more of a woman if she has long flowing hair. This is even more the case in Latin America. So.. our girls all want long flowing hair, they think this is the definition of womanhood.
I took the girls to get their hair cuts today and I have been cutting Sucena's hair shorter. Well this time, the girl went a little over too short and Sucena cried. Yesica is very proud of her long curly hair and will make fun of anyone whose hair is short. So will Milena. They have begged and pleaded with me that I should let my hair long "Never!", I said, to me long hair is disgusting. Too much work, too many problems and too much vanity associated with it. Men are also to be blamed. Ask almost any man and they will say that they also like long flowing hair.
When we were in Colombia our embassy doctor looked at the girls hair and said "Very Colombian, but extremely inconvenient". If you have long hair, most likely you have never had lice, or most likely never had to deal with getting rid of lice in long thick hair.
NO thank you. When I grow old, my hair will be short and gray. I will wash and wear it, and will concentrate in other important things than my hair like enjoying life.
I will put some older pictures of the girls here with long hair...
