It seems like every month there is recurring theme in our house. The last couple of months has been the emergency room.
When I was little my sister Millie was accident prone. There were all kinds of accidents she was involved in. I think my favorite one was the one where a little finger of a doll got glued to her finger. I didn't see it.. then there was the one where she fell over and cracked her head for watching what our rooster Juanito was doing.
A few weeks ago the girls were in the basement and were playing with something that Alex had left out, (some ropes that hang with handles made out of metal). One of the handles fell on Sucena's head. Luckily she has a hard head. She cried but we did not hear it. They were planning on not telling us (she said she did not want to get in trouble), but when I saw the ice on her head asked what happened and felt her head, it was to the emergency room. She cried and cried and said she did not want to go. On the way she was better, and she was OK, but the handle was so heavy I was worried about internal bleeding (she had knocked her head at the park the same week but I had seen it was against one of the tubes and I knew it was no emergency then). Her sisters did not seemed worried. They were more concerned about the fact they missed watching a movie. On the way back she explained about a horror movie she had seen at "La Casita" where there was an evil nurse who killed someone. Then I understood her panic when I said we would go to the hospital. Poor Sucena.
On the other hand, this last weekend Alex was splitting wood and Yesica was there. She wanted to help and took an Ax and hit against another one. A piece of metal flew out and cut right threw her shirt. A piece of metal went in, 1/2 an inch in! She bled a lot. We called the ambulance, because I did not know how big of a piece (although we saw the chipped ax) was and how far it was in. I had my first ambulance ride with anyone. In my job I have been in plenty of medical emergencies, but never had to ride an ambulance. Yesica was a trooper and she cried a lot less than when Sucena bothers her. Contrary to Sucena, Yesica was totally relaxed. She seemed to enjoy the attention and she was happy she got to watch TV, something that she does not get to do up north. She had about 10 pokes, scissors in her belly and the cut seemed to get bigger. At the end the X-ray showed a small chip about a millimeter inside, but we kept it in . We thought the risk of surgery was too much considering how small the chip was. Needless to say she won't be chopping wood up north again.
I was mortified and worried at the same time. The Nurses were wonderful (two big guys: Richard and Aaron, who by the way spoke Spanish), and the surgeon was great too.
My Memorial Day 2011 was definetely memorable.
Now I when the girls are climbing on something I tell them I've had my ambulance ride and don't need another one :)
