First Mother's Day

Today was my first Mother's Day. When you have never had a Mother's Day you don't know what to think. So I didn't think about it much. Alex had hoped that everyone would contribute and I would nothing but as we all would know that did not work. The girls gave me a couple of presents (earings and a bracelet) that they had chosen with Alex a couple of days ago. Milena gave me a couple of cards and the other girls had given me some cards yesterday. We had to take care of a few things before embarking in trying to get the girls decent outfits for tomorrow. Medellin is such a casual city it is difficult to find more formal outfits. We went through the craziness of the new mall again and tried to have lunch there, but we could not find a table so we ended up having lunch at our favorite grocery store. Crossing the street was crazier than ever even though there was a new traffic light. Then it was on to find outfits for the girls. I refused to go back to the new mall so we went to the 'old' mall (less than a block away). I found a dress for Sucena right a way, but for the other girls we had to go to the only pre-teen store in the mall, which was still casual but had dresses and skirts. Our oldest and I disagreed on a skirt and she ended up getting a nice dress. The second refused to try on a skirt or dress, so it was bright pants and a shirt. Our third who is in between sizes tried a few things that were too bit and ended up with pants as well. I did not think it would be so difficult to find girl dresses here. Our travel notes told us that everything would be more formal here. So we assumed we could buy more formal clothing here for the court date. There are at least 10,000 jean stores at these malls, but no stores where you can find a dress for a girl. I was with the girls by myself at the mall (Alex had gone back home to drop off left over food and drop off some money). The girl at the teen store was very nice to the girls and gave them a couple of free things.
I was hoping to go to a movie, but Alex got lost at the mall and could not find us then Sucena started crying because she did not get a sample of perfume at the teen store and because she had to go to the bathroom, so by the time this all happened the movie time had come and gone. Oh well... I got to drink a little bit of coffee at the Juan Valdez coffee shop (excellent) and then we came home. I got a call from my mom and two of my sisters. I warmed some food for the girls and then tried to put them to bed, except there was a very loud party downstairs that went on to 9:30 so they were having a hard time going to sleep. I cleaned the kitchen, did a load of wash, cleaned the girls bathroom and had a 1/2 a glass of wine. That was my first Mother's Day. Sorry no pictures today. There was no time...

  1. Dear Mercedes,
I hope you read my messages on May 7th for I wanted you to know before Mothers Day how much I thought of you and all your work these many months. Every year---but not this one it seems--I get down about Mothers Day. Somehow it is a bit like Christmas when you want someone to pamper you in give you presents. And then I am mad because Mothers day is just a commercial effort to sell things. And you are always a bit disappointed with the day. This year I told myself, as I told you, to appreciate all the things that are happening to you---savor them. I had a wonderful call from Laura and Ginny as well as your wonderful blog to relish. (They agree with me, by the way, that you should be nominated for Mother of 2010). We will talk to Sam tonight. Life is good. Love, Sis

  2. I'm delayed in writing here....catching up after being in London....I have to say, Mercedes, that entry made me *exhausted*!! Going dress shopping with FOUR girls at ONCE??!! Ugh! Just that alone would've made me call it a day. But then you went on and did this, that and the other thing. And then only a 1/2 glass of wine at the end of your long day. Whew! Well, I think that entry makes it abundantly clear how much you deserve that Mother of the Year nomination! You go, girl! :) Love, Laura
